Air Rifle
Air rifle shooting is a precision sport. Athletes stand 10 metres from the target and fire 4.5 mm (.177) pellets from a compressed-air rifle. The centre ring, the 10, is a dot just half a millimetre across.
The 10 metre air rifle event has been part of the Olympic Games since 1984. It is shot standing, without a sling or any rest, so the sport is all about stillness, breathing and trigger control.
Air rifles are quiet, have almost no recoil and can be shot indoors. That makes them one of the best ways for young people and newcomers to start target shooting safely, under a coach.
